After completing a medical residency, many may wish to further refine their skills by pursuing a Fellowship. As a tree has branches that form off of a main trunk, most specialties, similarly, have one or many subspecialties that explore the more intricate components of the primary specialty. The ACGME (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education) is the primary organization that defines and accredits Fellowship programs.

As with internships and residencies, matching for fellowships occur through the NRMP (National Resident Matching Program). NRMP provides a useful guide to applying for fellowship.
