The complexity of systems that define a human being, and the knowledge and studies of each system are never ending, expanding fields. Some physicians may prefer a more holistic approach to their future medical practice, while others may wish to pursue a specialty with more focused and narrow appeal. In many instances, selection of a specialty may become clearer as a student approaches the end of their graduate medical education.
Completion of an
ACGME (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education) residency program in a recognized specialty is effectively necessary to practice medicine within the United States. Even though certain states may issue an unrestricted license to practice medicine with as little as one year of post graduate medical training, recognition by third party payers, facilities where you may practice, and other factors that require proof of residency may limit your ability to practice.
Review the Internship section and
ACGME which touch on the types of residency programs (categorical, preliminary, advanced) and the application processes. Competition for program slots are intense. In 2021, there were 48,000 applicants (including international medical school students) applying for 38,000 positions.
The
NRMP (National Resident Matching Program) is the organization tasked with matching medical school students, making applications to residency and fellowship programs, with available programs.
