Medicaid is a Federal program, funded by both the Federal government and states, to provide access to medical and health related services to low income adults, children and certain disabled individuals. Medicaid is administered directly by each state. In certain states, health providers may weigh the benefits of access to the Medicaid patient population versus inadequate reimbursement levels provided by Medicaid.

As with Medicare and commercial health plans, state Medicaid participation requires an individual enrollment application. If you do not intend to accept payments for Medicaid patients, you may still need to enroll to permit your ability to order and refer on behalf of Medicaid patients.
