The first year of postgraduate medical residency training is referred to as an Internship. Internships can be pursued through different paths.
A categorical year is one where the internship is a component of a full residency program. All training, for the first and subsequent years, are with the same institution.
Preliminary internships offer one to two years of training, prior to entering a categorical or advanced residency. Transitional internships are considered preliminary.
The
NRMP (National Resident Matching Program) is a non profit organization that is tasked with matching U.S. citizen and non-U.S. citizen international medical school students and graduates with residency and fellowship training programs. Applicants do not apply through NRMP. They utilized the preferred method for each program (the NRMP program directory provides information on each program). Including international medical school students, there are more applicants than available programs’ slots.
